Bucking the system
The system is broke and common sense is dead.
A recipe for disaster.
I was talking about this two weeks ago with Jon Morgan, a Founding Father of this blog who's now working on his doctorate in journalism at Michigan State.
Because he's in East Lansing and neck deep in academia and I'm here with a challenging job and a family, we haven't spent much time together during the past two years.
But a recent death in Jon's family and a trip to Columbiana, Ohio, for a memorial service put us in the same car for about eight hours in early January.
During that time, we talked a lot about the old the neighborhood, its church, Fletcher Field, about all the accomplishments brought about by "Going Home" and all that we failed to do.
When we really thought about it, most of the good things that happened over the years came about because common sense overcame the system. Seriously, almost always we got something accomplished when we were able to convince somebody from within the system to turn their back on the rule book and do the right thing instead.
Unfortunately, too many of us -- particularly our leaders -- are afraid to buck the system to do the right thing. Instead, they waste their time screaming at each other, protecting their own interests and the interests of their supporters.
And look at the mess we're in now.
