In seach of 'Going Home'
Several times during the past four-plus years, I thought it was over -- this blog, the park, the reunions, the whole chebang.
But then something always happened -- an unexpected happy thing that presented itself like a tall, cold glass of lemonade on a hot, muggy August afternoon.
It happened again just before Christmas when The Detroit News redesigned its website and "Going Home" ended up falling off detnews.com.
I thought to myself at the time, "Oh, well. It's time. Nobody's reading anymore anyway."
Then last week, I got an email from a former colleague of mine at The News that told me otherwise.
He wrote to inform me that in the two weeks after the new detnews.com launched, lots of people were looking for "Going Home" -- so much so, that the only name being searched more than Michael Happy on the site was Jimmy Hoffa.
Imagine that, folks in this town looking for Happy almost as much as Hoffa.
I thank you for that.
More important, the children of the old neighborhood thank you.

The Fire Chief lived next door, two doors down ,our school crossing guard. There was a small park at the end of our block, we (the neighborhood kids) spent countless hours playing, dreaming and planning our futures. I went back to see where I grew up. My elementary school is no longer a school, the park is a diplapidated, overgrown, ominous mess and "my" house and yard looked so small compared to how I remember it.
The old neighborhood is the way it is now, I saw it, I felt it. I don't recognize it. I reject it. I'm choosing to keep it, at least in my mind, the way it was.........
You blog is one of hope, tinged with nostalgia, tempered with reality. I like it. Keep the torch lit. Thanks.
