Hopes for the new year

It's always been hard for me to curtail my imagination and ambition to change the world.

But as the days turn into months and now years in the new life of Fletcher Field, it's gotten a lot easier to keep it real.

What I had hoped to accomplish in the beginning -- using the park as a catalyst to rebuild the entire neighborhood within a decade -- just isn't going to happen. Frankly, the neighborhood might eventually be all park and farmland before I die.

So with 2012 just days away, here's what my scaled-down vision for the new year is:

[More:]

1. To keep Friends of Fletcher Field together and maybe even grow the organization.

2. To keep the park clean, cut and functional.

3. To hold at least four events throughout the year: a park cleanup and barbecue in May, a mid-summer barbecue at the park in August, a fall harvest/Halloween event at the park in October, and a Thanksgiving baskets giveaway in November.

4. To bring former Holy Name parishioners and members of the Shield of Faith congregation back together again to raise funds for the upkeep of the main sanctuary, which needs some work. (This is the most ambitious goal, but with your prayers and support, I think we can make this happen).

I wish you all a peaceful and prosperous new year, and hope to see you at some point in 2012 at Fletcher Field or the old church.

Highly laudable vision, Mike! Hopefully you have the support to bring it to fruition. My prayers and support are with you and all who participate. Remember: "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and the one who knocks, the door will be opened." (Matt. 7:7-8) Many blessings and much happiness, peace, and joy in 2012...and beyond.

Peace, Mike W.
