Rev. Gerry Bernier and doing God's work

There's a wonderful story in today's Detroit News about a priest from St. Joan of Arc Parish in St. Clair Shores who made a "miracle recovery" from the H1N1 virus.

The priest, Rev. Gerry Bernier, changed my life and I'm so happy God let us keep him for a while. As soon as you meet him, you know in your heart he's the real deal and an instrument of God's peace.

Bernier tells The News: "What I went through was not just about me. God was using me as a tool to get out a message. I think the message is you better believe in God and that God is with us."

[More:]

A few weeks back, I was at a class for Catechism teachers at St. Joan. The class was about Christian communities, and we were asked to share with the group some of the communities in our lives.

I told the story of Fletcher Field, putting the old Holy Name band back together, joining forces with Shield of Faith and others who live in the neighborhood around the park today to go "on a mission from God." I told them about fixing the park, holding programs there for nearly three years, joining Holy Name and Shield of Faith for an interfaith service back in March 2008.

The lady next to me said she knew of a similar effort at a park in Detroit, not too far from Fletcher. She said people got together, fixed it up -- only to watch it fall into disrepair again soon afterward.

"You know why your group has been successful?" she asked me and then answered the question herself. "Because you're doing God's work."

You better believe in God and that God is with us.
