Thanksgiving baskets and a tree lighting

This Friday at 7 p.m. we will be at the old Holy Name convent, now the multipurpose building for Shield of Faith, putting together Thanksgiving baskets.

Our hope is to provide a turkey and all the trimmings to at least 25 needy families in the area around SOF and Fletcher Field.

If you would like to donate to the cause, please email SOF minister Imogene Johnson at wdjohnson0742@sbcglobal.net, or you can simply drop off nonperishable items or cash donations at the church on Friday.

[More:]

We will then distribute the baskets on Sunday at 2 p.m. Weather permitting, we might play a touch football game at Fletcher Field with the kids in the neighborhood around 2:30.

Also, put Saturday, Dec. 5, on you calendar. On that day at 2 p.m., we will be holding a Christmas celebration at SOF, decorating some of the doors in the multipurpose building, putting up the tree in the church, then serving up some hot dogs, chips and lemonade.

Following the activities at the church, at 5 p.m., Mt. Olivet Cemetery will play host to its second annual tree lighting, honoring the season and our loved ones. More than 100 people turned out last year as the cemetery illuminated its two trees near the entrance. A few Christmas carols and a dusting of snow added to the beautiful setting.

It is with deep regret the Living Nativity production has been cancelled. It was scheduled for Dec 5th. After reading this post you know we have other activities planned for this date at SOF multipurpose room decorating doors, treats and tree lightging ceremony...

I'm sure everyone remembers our Fletcher Field resident camel GUNTHER (and Rev. Imogene Johnson's adoptee)....well Gunther was scheduled to make another appearance with his friends at the Living Nativity, since that has been cancelled we know now that he also had another appearance scheduled at the Warren Civic Center just up Van Dyke north of 12 Mile the same day. We are yet undecided if we will be transporting our community kids to see him at the civic center after the tree lighting. Gunther was such a huge hit last year, ok he stole the show, and we all want to see him again! Stay posted for furhter updates.

Just read the Detroit News article about a man who wants "his" park back.

Maybe he should be invited to Fletcher Field and see what's going on there.

What a sad story it was!

I hope he means it and isn't just rich and bored. I'd love to just be in the courtroom in his corner at least with photographs of Fletcher.
