Looking for Mr. V. pictures and more

Stories, pictures, memorabilia, whatever else you might have that would bring to life those summer afternoons playing ball at Fletcher Field under the guidance of Mr. V., Frank Verbanac.

At the interfaith service last year, we honored longtime Holy Name organist Fernando Reyes. This year, at the March 28 Holy Name party, we're going to pay tribute to Mr. V., the legendary Fletcher Field coach of the past.

Several members of Mr. V.'s family, including his wife, will likely be in attendance, and we want to do justice to a man who is an inspiration to all of us working with the children at the park today.

[More:]

Please contact me at mjhappyii@hotmail.com (put Mr. V. tribute in the subject line) if you have anything that could be added to a display, a slideshow or a commemorative program. Also let me know if you would like to speak during the event. We're thinking about having a few folks share their Mr. V. stories with the crowd that evening.

Thanks in advance.

Click here for a flyer for the March 28 H.N. party (pdf). Open it up, print it out and stick it on your refrigerator so you don't forget about the event.

i lived on Almont & the back of our house faced Fletcher...so i have many memories of Fletcher & Mr. V
i can remember...
Fletcher, when there was no fence along the Almont side
the old water fountain that perpetually ran
the sound of the chain clanging off the flagpoll
the shed & asking Mr. V for the keys
fresh sand being dumped in the sandbox
running laps
Holy Name Football practice
the day the Goal Poles went up
the 1st flooding of the "pond" in the winter
Gilbo, when it was a dirt road.
Mr. V's friend Harriet from Parks & Rec.
all the cars parked along Gilbo & the alley when the "Fletcher Unlimited" teams would play.......

Hey Ronnie,do you remember sitting on my porch one night, there was you,Roje and Dave Smith, and across the street from me lived Cheryl and Debbie,We hadn't known who they were yet, because they had just moved in. And this car comes by with two young guys inside and they slow down in front of the house and they look at the girls and they they floor the car, take off and crash into Chum's parked car. Do you remember that. And then you jumped up ran to Chum's place,he was living across the stree from you,I believe he was married to Sharon Ingram then. Do you remember that. Don't remember what happened after that, but I do remember Chum coming out and swearing and really pissed off.
