Treats, trunks and a trip

The weather wasn't so good around Metropolitan Detroit on Sunday.

When people arrived at Fletcher Field for the Treats in Trunks event, many who had to drive from other areas to get to the park talked of traveling through strong winds, heavy rain and even a hail storm.

At the park itself, well, the winds were gusty but the sun was shining brightly -- just like Shield of Faith minister Imogene Johnson and her prayer warriors predicted. Oh, yeah, I think The Big Guy likes what's going on in our little part of Detroit.

[More:]

At least 150 children from the neighborhood showed up to trick-or-treat from car to car on the Mt. Olivet side of Fletcher Field. The kids' smiles were absolutely priceless -- as were the decorated trunks.

Of the more than 20 vehicles that participated in the event, the neatest was Jim (Kustarz) Morey's van, which was transformed into a pirate ship. Morey joined forces with Mt. Olivet Cemetery and pirate wench Marianne Peggie to put the display together, which would have been even cooler if the wind hadn't forced the group to tone down its effort. Certain parts of the makeshift ship just wouldn't stay together because of the wind.

The ensuing barbecue was a rousing success as well. We scarfed down 120 hot dogs and another 120 hamburgers. Nobody left the park hungry.

The day would have been perfect if not for what happened to my mother, Marilyn (Lemanski) Happy, early on.

In honor of the fall season, Mom took a nasty fall while decorating my sister's van before Sunday's festivities really got under way. Mom tripped on a rut and came down hard on her left elbow, which doctors at Henry Ford BiCounty Hospital in Warren later determined was dislocated and fractured.

They popped the elbow back into place and put Mom's arm in a splint. She should be good as new by Christmas.

Dad says Mom cried a lot on the way to the hospital, but not because of the pain. Mom was upset because she spent days working on picture boards to decorate her trunk with. The boards were filled with collages of all the events we've held at the park during the past 13 months. Dad says the neighborhood children were thrilled by the pictures; at least 50 kids had surrounded their vehicle to get a glimpse before Mom and Dad had to bolt for the hospital.

That's why Mom was sad. She has a good heart.

But a not-so-good elbow right now.

(Thanks to Yvette Gerace for the pictures. I will put together an audio slideshow of the event very soon.)

Prayers are out there for your speedy recovery Marilyn! Just disregard Mike's pun about you falling for Fall, yuck yuck. Karma awaits him. + -

U (wink wink)

As I drove some kids to school this morning they were all talking about that hail storm yesterday. What storm I asked? I guess it was pretty big. One of the girls I drive just got her permit. She said they were on Gratiot at 13 mile about 2:30 when the storm hit. Her mother made her pull over so she could take over the wheel. I live approx. a mile east of Gratiot between 10 and 11 mile. Never saw a drop of rain or hail yesterday. Just sunshine, blue sky, and well, lots of wind. I with Imogene about that Divine Intervention.

We thank God for the beautiful, but windy, weather for our Treat or Trunk festivites, all those who decorated their trunks and dressed up in costume, and those who donated candy and food for our Thanksgiving baskets. It really was a special day especially given the wintry weather in so many places.

We love Marilyn Happy. Our prayers continue to go out for Marilyn Happy, the official photgrapher (and so many other titles), for the Fletcher Field events. My heart dropped when I found out she had fallen. Although it was a great affair, it seemed something was missing for me when she left. But, I know she will have a speedy recovery. Get well soon Ms. Marilyn.

So sorry to hear that our dear matriarch and historian has got a bum elbow. I didn’t get a chance to look at every picture, but what I did see was very special. You have the biggest heart of all! Who else would let a, ahem, complicated bunch like us take over their house – let alone feed us so well!

Get well soon Marilyn! Whatever we can do to help you in the meantime, just let us know!!

Yes, the children certainly did enjoy the (almost) perfect day!

DEAREST FRIENDS OF FLETCHER FIELD, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
What an absolute riot. To see the faces of the kids, with them big ole smiles, gettin them bags filled to the best of their ability, making multiple trips through the line like we wouldn't notice them again and again. It brought back memories of what we were like, I remember myself taking off my mask or trying to change my look to go to houses again thinking they wouldn't notice it was me again, but they always seemed to notice. The thought that the kids yesterday were doing what we did 30,40, 50 years ago is astounding. I really felt bad making the two kids cry that I did, but I think I calmed them enough to at least get them to stop crying, they will probably grow old being afraid of pirates. I seem to remember one of us still cant stand clowns, Mike Happy? Then the food for all, I saw a lot of happy adults eating away, Mark and I included.I know we have helped create memories these children will remember for the rest of their lives.Like we said from the very beginning, its all about the kids and what we can do to make pleasant memories for them.
Then the weather issue and the prayer warriors. As usual you guys rock! There is a God and he loves what we have done and what we will continue to do! THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!

Mrs,Happy you countinue to be in my prayers, quick healing and keep smiling.

RE: Trunks and Treats and "I will put together an audio slideshow of the event very soon", Is this too soon still? Trying to be patient and looking forward to one. If there's not going to be one may I ask the person who was taking pictures (Mike's sister?) to forward the one she took of me sitting by my car? My 2 teens loved my hippie get-up and can't believe I didn't get or take a picture of myself. My son said, "Mom, you looked really bomb" BOMB???? I used that word back in 197_! Along with TLA and RMA signed on every note we passed to our friends. (Remember smiley face stickers?)
Uh oh, memories coming back some more...WKNR Keener 13, CKLW the big 8, WDRQ's a ball,-oh the prank phone calls we used to make with that one...,and Hi, did you call pipeline?...

Because of mom's fall -- she's the one I usually get the majority of the pictures from -- I don't have enough photos to do this. I need at least 40 to make it work.

I will check with my sister to see if she can help.
