Walmsley Field

Lee and Bob Walmsley on their "Field of Dreams."

I'd stack the baseball diamond at Fletcher Field against any in the city.

Thanks to the TLC of Lee and Bob Walmsley, the Fletcher infield is pretty much free of any bad hops. Geez, it wasn't this good back when I was a kid.

"I just want it to be known that people still care about this park and this neighborhood," Lee Walmsley said.

[More:]

Two representatives from Inner City Exposure -- an organization whose mission is to use baseball as the vehicle to enhance the quality of life in the community by developing the mental, physical and leadership skills in our young people -- visited Fletcher Field on Sunday and were stunned by the wonderful condition of the playing field.

"This is remarkable," said Dwight Smith, one of the leaders of ICE. "I thought I knew all the good diamonds on the east side. I didn't know about this one."

He does now and plans to use the field as part of his program, which will benefit the children of the neighborhood for the entire summer.

Thanks again, Lee and Bob. And, as always, a special thank you to Mark Gracely and his staff at Mt. Olivet Cemetery for keeping the grass at the park looking mighty fine as well.
