Preparing for this Saturday's park cleanup
Four members of the Happy family, Imogene and I met in the park Tuesday to check out exactly what needs to be done this Saturday.
The park is in pretty good shape, overall. The swings are up and in working order, the rest of the equipment still has a good coat of paint, there is a new net on the basketball rim (not sure who did that, but thanks whoever you are!), and the grass has been cut.
There is definitely still work to be done on Saturday, though, so make sure to come out and pitch in!
This Saturday, May 17, we will be working on projects from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., then we’ll be enjoying an afternoon in the park with a BYOP (Bring Your Own Picnic) lunch, kite-flying and softball.
Here is a list of the projects we have identified for this Saturday, along with supplies or tools we could use for each. If you have an idea for a project we’ve missed (or a tool you think we’ll need) please send it to us in a comment or an email and we’ll update the list.
- Picking up trash - we’ll have trash bags and plastic gloves, and we are getting a dumpster from the city where we’ll deposit the trash. You might want to bring leather work gloves.
- Weeding the baseball diamond - Jim Morey and Brian Happy put down weed killer earlierr this year, and while it kept weeds from taking over the diamond, they are starting to creep in again. If you have small trowels, bring them, and we also want some weed-and-feed to spread around, and whatever tools we’ll need to spread it.
- Trimming trees - we’ll be going around the perimeter of the park and trimming trees. We could use a chain saw, and if you have a bow saw, we could use a few of those, too.
- Gardening - Edith is going to have some plants for us to create a small garden in the park. If you have gardening tools, shovels, hoes, rakes, watering cans, etc., bring them. We are also looking for a gas-powered tiller so we don’t have to break up the earth by hand with shovels. We are also going to need twine and stakes to use as fence posts so we can make a simple fence to mark the area.
- Neighborhood cleanup - if we get everything at the park taken care of, we are planning on spreading out into the neighborhood to clean up streets around the park.
- Removing more of the old fence? - if we have time and people, we might also try to get rid of more of the old four-foot-tall fence that still runs along the north side of the park. If we try it, we won’t worry about the fence posts, just the fencing itself. I am not sure what this would take, but I think we’d at least need wire cutters.
Accuweather.com says the weather Saturday will be “Mostly cloudy and breezy with a couple of showers possible” and a high of 64, but the picture for the day is a sun, so while I would probably bring a rain coat and an umbrella, it sounds like the weather will cooperate.

And finally, for those of you following the kite-in-the-tree saga, we will not be attempting to rescue the kite stuck over Jim Morey’s old house this Saturday because the kite has already been rescued.
The rescuer is attempting to hold it for ransom - a whopping $45 million dollars (enough to buy the whole city airport - hmmm…). I don’t want to name any names, but the ransom messages were sent from Jimmy’s cell phone and he has been named in one note as the contact who’ll give further information from the kidnappers. At any rate, I suspect the kite will show itself this Saturday one way or another.
So pack a picnic lunch, your baseball gear, sturdy gloves and any tools you think you’ll need and come help us get the park ready for a summer of fun. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
Comments, Pingbacks:
$45 million for the kite is a DEAL !!. you could easily come up with the money from a new fund raiser or have volunteer singers with guitar knocking on local doors singing Kumbia.
