Kite update, and we're gearing up for May 17
After seeing Imogene’s husband become Pastor Johnson (congratulations Pastor Johnson and everyone else who was ordained on Sunday!), I drove down Dobel Street to check on the wayward kite.

It is pretty high up, but the kite is still in one piece, hanging over Jimmy’s old house. I have no idea if we’re going to be able to get it down. Maybe if Jimmy climbs onto his old roof he’ll be able to jump over onto the tree that is holding the kite, then shimmy out on the branch and free it. He should probably wear a football helmet or something, and we can all hold a sheet taut beneath him to catch him if he falls… Honest. We’ll catch you Jimmy.
We also had our Friends of Fletcher Field meeting tonight at Happy’s mom’s house. The park cleanup is set for May 17. Cleanup will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., then we’ll be picnicking and playing in the park. There’s a rumor there might even be a bocce ball set there.
We began blocking out activities for the rest of the summer and will have a calendar ready and posted soon.

A representative from 4-H came to talk to us about starting a group centered in the neighborhood (no, it isn’t just for rural farmers). They have a service center a few minutes from the park and are involved in urban gardening, among other things. And since we have Edith’s garden (and are working on the tractor grant - thanks, mom, for your good help!), we might do some 4-H programs on agriculture this summer.
Cinco de Mayo was observed with nachos, cinnamon rolls, and that favorite Cinco de Mayo treat, cannolis, courtesy of Jimmy (I probably shouldn’t make fun since he brought cannolis, and I love cannolis, and mmm, were they good - I had two along with some nachos).
Coming soon: We have begun working with Shield of Faith on finding a tenant for the school. We’ll keep you posted on the search, and what you can do to help. And Happy is going to write soon on going fishing…

Although we could probably raise a few dollars for the park with a Jimmy Knievel attempt at getting it, I kinda like it right where it is. I think it serves as another visual reminder of this great initiative. Everyone who saw that kite at the prime of its height can attest to the fact that it was well over Mt. Olivet Cemetery (or beyond) and yet, the right conditions brought it right back to wave over Dobel St.
Coincidence?
