The resolution

This past year, 2007, was a difficult one for a lot of people.
For the Happy family, it began with my wife waking up in early January, unable to get out of bed. After several weeks of major discomfort and misdiagnosis, a doctor finally told her she had a herniated disc in her neck. When therapy failed to alleviate her pain, Shannon underwent surgery at St. John's in Detroit late in June.
Also early in January, one of my younger cousins, Sarah Happy, was diagnosed with cancer. So instead of beginning law school at U-M as scheduled, the poor kid went through months of treatment and chemo.
Thankfully, Shannon and Sarah are both doing fine now and looking forward to better days ahead.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Virginia Happy, my grandmother, who passed away a couple of weeks ago. A nasty fall the day after Thanksgiving and the resulting complications took her life at the age of 83. We will all miss her very much.
Over the holidays, my extended family talked a lot about how awful 2007 was. Sarah's father, Bob Happy, even threw out the idea of playing host to a calendar-burning party tonight. I don't think he was serious, at least I hope not.
The truth is, it wasn't so bad at all. One look at the headlines today -- Five killed in head-on crash in Toledo, including two from Michigan -- sums up just how blessed we are. And if that doesn't catch your eye, then take a ride down Dobel Street, see what the folks living there had to ride out in 2007.
Life is full of turbulence. Making the ride back to our maker as comfortable as possible for as many people as possible should be our mission.
That's my resolution for 2008.
What's yours?
