The grandma connection
My grandmothers, Virginia Happy and Mildred Lemanski, have been connected for more than 60 years.
Their offspring, Michael Harry Happy and Marilyn Helen Lemanski, married each other in 1963. Even before the wedding, Virginia and Mildred cleaned the altar together at Holy Name. After their kids married, Virg and Millie (that's how they refer to each other) played cards together, celebrated the holidays in tandem and mourned the loss of loved ones as a team.
Today, their relationship took a bizarre twist -- one that might connect them in eternity.
As you already know, Virginia took a nasty fall the day after Thanksgiving. Tonight, she lays peacefully in the hospice unit at Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital, her fate already determined.
Mildred took a fall earlier today and suffered a stroke. She's in the monitored-care unit at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, her fate still on the cloudy side.
At least six times during my short stay with Grandma Lemanski tonight, she asked about Grandma Happy, crying when she posed the question. Grandma L. seems more concerned about the condition of Grandma H. than she cares about herself.
Their connection reminds me of the bond the extraterrestrial had with Elliott in the 1982 movie "E.T." The two characters could actually feel each other's pain.
As much as it pains me to think about losing two loved ones at the same time, it just seems right for it to happen this way.
