Posted by Megan Burleson on Thu, Oct 29, 2009 at 10:32 AMWhat's for dinner? Relish this giveaway
I am one of those people who dread the question, "What's for dinner?" Ugh, I hate it. It sends me into a tizzy. The conversation always seems to go like this:
Hubs: "What's for dinner?"
Me: "I don't know, what do we have?"
Hubs: "I don't know (looks in the fridge) Not much, what do you want me to get?"
Me: "Ugh, I don't know. You decide."
Hubs: "But, I don't want to get something you don't like!"
Me: "I don't care, really, just don't want to make the decision tonight."
"..."
Hubs: "Seriously, what do you want me to get?"
(sound of me smacking my forehead)
And this was every night. Until now.
For the past couple of weeks, I have been using an online meal planning service called Relish. I ran across it when I was looking for a solution to our conversations, new recipes to try, and I admit, something to make my life easier.
It's simple. For $7 a month you choose from a list of delicious dinner ideas for the week and print out the grocery list. All of the recipes take 30 minutes or less and cost less than $85 a week! You also get monthly freezer menus and other sample menus and recipes such as healthy lunches for your kids, easy and delicious desserts and seasonal recipes.
Intrigued? It gets better. I was pleasantly surprised this week when Relish contacted me to do a giveaway. If you would like to win a one-year subscription to this service, go to megsamommy.com and sign up by Sunday. Good luck!

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey's newest show, Over The Top, plays Nov. 18-22 at The Palace of Auburn Hills and promises fun for the whole family. Here's a description: "Over The Top is a wacky and whimsical circus spectacular during which audiences will experience maniacal mayhem as Ringmaster Chuck Wagner and clown eccentric Tom Dougherty compete for control of a magical top hat that brings to life their imaginations. Show attendees will also see the renowned Cossacks' mind-boggling equestrian stunts and the Flying Caceres' high-altitude feats on an enormous double-decker trapeze."
Get there an hour before show time to join performers in getting CircusFit® and learn circus skills at the free All Access Pre-show.

Posted by Beth Reeber Valone (The Detroit News) on Fri, Jul 17, 2009 at 1:31 PMBread lovers can win some cool prizes
I love, love, love bread and the idea of making it, but never have the time (or talent) to pull it off. So I really appreciate good bakers and bread stores. If you are one of those bread-loving mommas, you could win some great prizes in the Bread Lovers Recipe Contest put on by Panera Bread of Southeast Michigan and The Henry Ford.
Submit your favorite recipe using one or more of Panera's breads at www.paneradetroitcontest.com by July 27 and you could be one of three finalists who will compete in a recipe showdown at a Panera store or win prizes such as a $500 Panera card. Even those recipe-challenged among us can enter to win a Greenfield Village Bakers Delight package by stopping by any local Panera and submitting an entry form.
I also have one package to give away to a MichMoms reader. Just shoot me an e-mail at michmoms@detnews.com with BREAD in the subject line plus your full name, phone number, city and why you love bread. I'll choose a winner next week. The only hitch: you have to pick up your prize from The Detroit News lobby in downtown Detroit.
The Bakers Delight package includes:
- Panera mug, apron and bread-for-a-year certificate
- Beautiful hand-crafted bowl created by Greenfield Village artisans
- Historically inspired baking tools, including a rolling pin, wooden spoons and cookie cutters.
Gotta go now, I've got to find some yummy bread to eat. :)

Did you read the Jodi Picoult book, "My Sister's Keeper," about a family torn over the reliance on the youngest child to help her leukemia-stricken sister remain alive? I did and loved it.

Download your free passes - you can get one or two - at gofobo.com. Note: You will have to register on the site first.
Enjoy! It should make for a nice girls night out. And ask yourself afterward, what would you do in that situation?

Posted by Beth Reeber Valone (The Detroit News) on Mon, Jun 8, 2009 at 2:25 PMWin book to add to your kid advice resource bucket
I really appreciate practical, easy to understand advice. When my kids were babies and toddlers and I had a question about their health or development, I always turned to the tried and true "What to Expect" books before I called our pediatrician.
I also really like Dr. Molly O'Shea, our "Ask the Pediatrician" blogger, because she offers down-to-earth medical and developmental tips and breaks down current events, such as the swine flu scare.
Dr. Daniel Klein, our "Ask the Child Psychologist" blogger, is someone I wish I had in my back pocket to help me make sense of and solve day-to-day (hour-to-hour?) family challenges. Dr. Dan is the voice of reason in a crazy world.
Where do you turn for quick checks on "is my child normal?" issues?
Here's another resource to put on your bookshelf: "Mommy Calls" by Dr. Tanya Remer Altmann, who has been seen frequently on the "Today Show." "Mommy Calls" aims to answer parents' top questions about babies and toddlers. It's organized by category and age group and filled with clever tips and fun facts, along with "Pediatric Points" designed to quickly and clearly communicate important recommendations in easy-to-understand language.
If you'd like to win a copy of "Mommy Calls," send an e-mail to michmoms@detnews.com with MOMMY CALLS in the subject line by Sunday night and I'll pick a winner next week.
After all, we can use all the help we can get, right?
