A Great Detroit Day @ The Harvest Beer Festival and Beyond
The beer festival was great as was the entire day. I got up early yesterday and drove into Detroit from Chicago. Arrived at my buddy Eric's house at 12 30 and we almost immediately left for Eastern Market. The weather was heinous. Windy, rainy, cold and perfect for beer! We started at the first tent and went progressively down the line trying as many varieties as we could. We went about 2 hours and were nicely buzzed when we decided to go to the food tent. We chose Detroit Brewing Company's offerings: 3 pulled pork sliders, topped with cole slaw and spicy bbq sauce, with a side of tart pickle chips. AMAZING!
Anyway, we stayed for about 4 hours braving the elements. The bands were perfect for the scene and it was great to see all sorts of people hanging out in Detroit, wearing Detroit sports wear and other Detroit pride clothes, like "Made in Detroit" and Detroit Muscle shirts and hats everyone was happy and the city was truly alive and was I was truly proud to be a Detroiter and Michigander.
We left there and headed over to the Westin Book Cadillac to drink at the Motor Bar. Unfortunately, the Motor Bar was closed for a private event, but the new Spa19 24Grill was open and we parked ourselves there, quickly made friends with the bartender and ordered Belvedere Vodka martinis and made friends with the patrons around us.
Anyway, we hung there for a few hours before heading a bit down Michigan avenue to Slow's BBQ. We got there at 7 30ish and the the bar was already four deep. We put our name in and hung out, eventually scoring two seats at the bar. We decided to just stay there and eat. The food doesn't need any more endorsements, it is just plain good.
After, we walked over to LJ's Lounge and ordered PBR in the can.
We then went to the Majestic Cafe to see Bump. We stayed for the first set and then left and headed to Gusoline Alley. We had a drink there and then, finally, we decided to end the night with coneys at National.
A great Detroit night! Can't wait for next year's Harvest Beer Festival.

NO NO NO IF YOU WANT TO DRINK OR SALE UNTIL 4AM, THEN MOVE TO ILLINOIS OR LAS VEGAS!! NO NO NO
Beer
Strange how the microbrew community gets larger and more established - usually trying to stuff more and more hops and grain into a glass until light can't even escape it. Meanwhile, the macrobrews (while occasionally releasing a decent micro-faux) continue on with WWII-style ingredient rationing.
Beer Fest
The Michigan Summer Beer Festival is a well-run, fun thing to do in the summer. I've attended it for years now. Its organized and its a great chance to try Michigan craft beer - the best in the nation! I'm looking forward to the new, Harvest Beer Fest at Eastern Market this fall!

Belle Isle sure has changed since when I was a kid.
My parents used to make us take home trash that would not fit into the garbage cans, and we'd make sure any paper on the ground - whomever accidentally left it - was thrown away. We were taught to respect the land.

My it sure has changed. I wonder what the cause of this is?
Where are the zoo animals, and the carriage rides?
Aquariums
Although its not in Detroit, if you like aquariums and zoos, you need to drive to Omaha, Nebraska. Their zoo is phenomenal, and yes, it has an aquarium. Its well worth the trip.

SELF SABOTAGE: DON'T KNOCK IT TILL YOU TRIED IT
Let's get Monica Conyers involved in this GM move to Warren. There is nothing Detroit city residents like more than a politician who tells suburban investors, or even politicians with free tax money (Cobo), to stick it where the sun don't shine. Self sabotage is the one skill Detroiters have mastered.
Whether it's the 'Don't Snitch' policy that ensures dangerous criminals remain loose on the streets, or whether it's heckling those hard workers among them who are trying to succeed by accusing them of 'acting white,' I'd put Detroit up against any inner city in the country when it comes to self sabotage.
Electing politicians who appeal to Detroiters with the promise that they won't let the white devil from the suburbs come in and take over has special appeal to the self saboteurs. The reason this trick works so well because politicians who lower themselves to this little trick invariably end up proving to be completely corrupt. What better way to sabotage yourself and send your city reeling than wallowing in corruption?
Many of you will ask," Why would any group of people want to sabotage themselves?" While polling friends and acquaintances, there is only one plausible explanation that keeps surfacing.
That theory is that Detroiters don't want to work. They don't want to improve themselves; they don't want to get up early every morning; they don't want to be told what to do; they don't care if they live in filth. If it takes self sabotage to keep others around them down too, then so be it.
Many hate to see others improve, work and succeed because it makes them feel inadequate. They'd rather sit in some ramshackle home and blame white people for their plight.
Is there any merit in this explanation that keeps surfacing? From where I sit, it is hard for me to say but I don't have a better answer. Immigrants have come here with nothing and worked their way out of poverty throughout history. Those who have succeeded are able to keep it through hard work. I'm not sure there is any other way.
Marvin Gaye: War Is Not The Answer
After World War Two, periodically you would hear about Japanese fighters, isolated on some remote island in southeast Asia, still fighting long after the war was over, and everyone else had moved on.
Hmmm. Isolated, out of touch, still living in the past - sounds like the elderly female voting block that dominates Detroit politics. They are still fighting as if the race riots in Detroit are fresh in their minds. Senility is a wonderful thing. You get to be young forever.
Somebody should tell them that Coleman Young has passed and the suburbs just voted heavily in support of a black President. Be sure to welcome them to the Twenty First Century while they vote for the next politician who promises to protect them from the suburbs.
Until then, you can hear them every morning calling in to Mildred Gaddis' radio show.
Monica For Mayor
Detroit, the fact that the Auto Show is looking at options now instead of immediately choosing Cobo as it's location is the result of voter gullibility. Detroit's voters have continually voted for it's most racist politicians, seeking out people who will fight with the suburbs because the suburbs are largely white. Detroiters don't understand that spending and investing in Detroit comes from white suburbia. They don't care ; they just want to strike out at someone or something and blame them for their troubles.
Unfortunately rabble rousing has become a lucrative cottage industry in Detroit. Radio personality Mildred Gaddis rants about how the suburbs benefit too from the auto show so the suburbs should pay. Every event in every metro community can have positive spillover effects. Travellers who come to Detroit to see Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum may either stay and/or eat in downtown Detroit. That doesn't mean that Detroit owes Dearborn tax money.
Mildred thinks the suburbs should pay Detroit because they are nice enough to host the auto show. That is backward and convoluted thinking. It is a priviledge for Detroit to host the auto show, ensuring that they enjoy the greatest possible benefits from it. If it is located in the suburbs now, Detroit will be denied the priviledge of hosting the show, and will benefit to a much, much lesser degree.
Why did this happen? Freeman Hendrix, Mildred's close ally wrote a letter to Conyers, Reeves, Watson and Collins on the eve of the mayoral election hoping that he could portray himself as the protector of the city from the white devil in the suburbs and get elected by killing this legislation. Since then, many on the city council see it as an issue where they can prove their defiance against the suburbs and get reelected in November.
All this political posturing is strictly selfish ; an attempt to feather their own nests at the expense of the city. They are being offered our tax money to fix an asset that cannot ever be removed from the city. But they decided to look a gift horse in the mouth, and make more racists accusations to a suburban citizenry who, after forty years of it, are tiring of this game.
It is discouraging to continually watch your tax money go to a city that has little ability of raising it's own tax money, then be insulted and become the subject of racist accusations because it is not enough. Meanwhile the city's politicians line their own pockets to a degree rarely if ever seen in America.
If you don't believe me, type Detroit Public Schools into Wikipedia and prepare to be shocked and sickened with an unending cataloguing of adults stealing from their children, and ensuring their children will have no textbooks, no toilet paper, no future.
Will Detroit voters ever realize that the people stealing from them is not white suburbia, but the very people who appeal to them at election time as protectors against the suburbs? With only 23% of Detroiters graduating high school, it is unlikely. They will continue to circle the wagons and build walls and elect thieves.
Detroit does not deserve the auto show, and it looks like it will not have it, victims of their own stupidity. That's okay, they can get back at the suburbs by reelecting Monica Conyers. In fact, why not make her Mayor. We will give her whatever she wants, we promise. We will spend and invest in Detroit and your city will come back from the dead, while we listen to Monica insult and accuse us of racism. Yeah, right
DETROIT: Beware the "Pity Pimps!"
I am watching America fall all over itself over Tiger Woods at the Masters. I think of Michael Jordan, then the President of the United States.
Then I thought about how differences among people of light skin who are different nationalities, sex and age keep them apart. Yet for none of these groups has whining and complaining become a cottage industry, except for blacks.
I see black people all the time driving around the suburbs in BMW's, Range Rovers, etc. You have to wonder how many are affirmative action benefactors, or corrupt recipients of the largess of the Detroit Public Schools over the last twenty years.
Then I listen to Pity Pimps like Mildred Gaddis who lives in a fine home in Oakland County and pays for it by feeding the victimization mindset, and off of the rationalizations of poor people in Detroit who don't want to bother improving themselves because it takes too much energy.
Mildred has many 'Pity Pimp' colleagues who have lived off of the complainers ; the Kilpatrick family, city council, Coleman Young, Sam Riddle, Adolph Mongo, Freeman Hendrix, several Ministers and scores of others who have the taint of corruption, or in some cases the stain, but who live off the guilt and/or political correctness of white people.
I sense that those days are coming to an end, and white people are realizing that the best therapy is to insist that people advance themselves, because realistically there is no other way.
I came here from another country, disgusted at the white people who had created this situation. Then I got here and realized that white people deserve a medal for living among this populace, and keeping quiet about the loud, backward, disgusting ways of a people who exist largely at the behest of a productive majority, and many of whom have no intention of contributing.
The situation in Detroit is almost comical if it wasn't so sad. Listening to Mildred Gaddis invent topics to inflame a populace against 'the man (usually white)' day after day, you realize that it has indeed become a cottage industry.
The leeches who live off this sentiment while donning the robes of protector may be the most disgusting of all. Then again, the sad populace that remains entrenched in the ghetto insist upon it. And the pity pimps are more happy to accomodate them.
Detroit Described As Embarrassing Filth
This article is a big part of why the suburbs are always trying to help Detroit.
http://music.msn.com/music/article.aspx?news=402528>1=28102
This article is featured on the cover page of most computers in this country - www.msn.com. We knew that showcasing the area would bring a little reality with it. Detroit is described as embarrassing filth. That is exactly how we feel in the suburbs too.
When we travel we look down at our shoes when people ask where we are from. We hate that.
So, what's the problem. Why isn't Detroit fixed? Detroit isn't fixed because every time there is an election, someone corrupt plays the race card to get votes and lines his/her pockets while in office.
Like former Detroiter Terry Foster said on the radio last month, Kwame went to the churches right before the election and told the people that whitey is attacking and wants to steal from them, but he will ensure that doesn't happen.
Freeman Hendrix tried the same trick writing a letter to city council two days before the mayoral election saying the suburbs are trying to steal Cobo. His media stooge Mildred Gaddis continues to stir that pot, as does city council who see it as an election aid for next November.
Coleman Young did the same thing for two decades. He hurled insults at Whitey and dealt in kruggerands.
And for decades Whitey and his money generally stayed away from the insults while Detroit rotted. The only people who won were Detroit city politicians, school board members and their relatives.
Martha Reeves just told us we cannot even use the name Detroit to describe where we live. Martha needs the money because she is a quarter million behind in her taxes, and has her city paid driver take her to the casinos several nights a week. Her council checks are garnisheed so she really has to insult Whitey because it is keeping her out of jail.
The sad part of this whole charade is that there is nothing left to steal in Detroit, but the residents are sure we want it anyway, even when we show up with money. They concoct a plot about how we are trying to steal their jewels and tell us where to stick our money.
Our previous Governor tried to bring money and take over the schools to fix them almost ten years ago, but he was told by the corrupt school board and city politicians to get lost. The citizens loved it.
Now it is finally getting fixed by the state because the state couldn't throw any more money at it. Luckily they hired someone who is palatable to the citizens, and most don't even realize what is happening.
Half the citizens have moved out of Detroit. It is nothing but a bunch of boarded up homes with sad, uneducated residents hiding inside waiting for someone who looks like them to tell them what to do. The lower the average IQ of the city gets, the more they respond to politicians playing the race card.
How do you help these people? How do we avoid being described as embarrassing filth? You can't help people who refuse your help. While the nation is watching, tell us what to do.
Thanks Melody
Thanks for the music and drinks you been providing and weekend entertainment, I find it very helpful. Keep up the good work.
