Posted by Jocelynn Brown (The Detroit News) on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 2:52 PMSimple project helps you use leftover yarn
Looking for a simple way to use some of that leftover yarn you've been stock-piling; something beyond that basic scarf you've given as a gift to every member of the family?
Well, why not take that scarf pattern a step further and turn it into a shrug simply by making it wider and stitching seams at each end to create sleeves? Tiny shrugs are also adorable on babies and toddlers.
I didn't know it at the time, but I began knitting one last weekend out of a black worsted weight wool. It started out as one of two squares for a simple pullover vest, but then my imagination took over and I decided to make it my first shrug. It's already about half finished! If you feel you need a pattern to make a shrug, check out knittingpatterncentral.com. Hmmm, now doesn't this sound like a way to make room for more yarn to stash?

Posted by Jocelynn Brown (The Detroit News) on Fri, Oct 2, 2009 at 3:10 PMDetroit Waldorf School host first Knit-A-Thon
"Sharing hearts and hands to benefit our school and community" is the theme for Detroit Waldorf School's first knit-a-thon which runs now through Oct. 24.
"Like other 'thons' (e.g., Walk-a-thon, dance-a-thon, etc), the Knit-a-thon is a fundraiser in which participants invite pledges or sponsorship of their participation in the event. Instead of getting pledges per mile walked, we are collecting pledges per knitted 6-inch square.
"Alternatively, you can collect a flat pledge amount for the event (regardless of the number of squares knitted.) All funds raised from the Knit-a-thon will directly benefit the Detroit Waldorf School."
"The knitted or crocheted squares will be assembled into blankets that will be donated to Children's Hospital of Michigan."
A Knit-a-thon Cast Off event, set for 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m., will take place October 24 at the school which is located at 2555 Burns in Detroit. The event will feature a live performance by singer/songwriter Joe Reilly at 1 p.m., a silent auction at 2 p.m. and an award-closing ceremony at 3 p.m. Fiber arts classes will be offered for a fee from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. The requested donation is $15 for adults, $5 children and free for those under five.
You can register for $15 at www.detroitwaldorf.org/knitathon.html. For more information, call (313) 822-0300.
