Knit-a-Thon Cast-Off event at Detroit Waldorf School set for Saturday

If you knit or crochet, you won't want to miss seeing how students at Detroit Waldorf School are using handwork skills to benefit their school and community.

"...join students, families and friends of the Detroit Waldorf School on Sat., Oct. 24, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as they gather for the Knit-a-Thon Cast-Off Celebration, to celebrate the conclusion of a unique fundraising effort. The event, featuring a combination of fiber arts and family fun, will take place at Detroit Waldorf School, 2555 Burns, Detroit.

Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for children (Currently enrolled DWS students, registered Knit-a-Thon participants, and children under 5 years old are free). All proceeds from the event benefit the Detroit Waldorf School.

The Cast-Off Celebration wraps up the Detroit Waldorf School's first Knit-a-Thon, in which knitters and crocheters around metro Detroit joined members of the school community in raising money for the school, and knitting 6-inch squares for blankets that will be donated to patients at Children's Hospital of Michigan.

A 3 p.m. Knit-a-Thon closing ceremony will celebrate our accomplishments, recognize volunteers, and give awards to the students who knitted the most squares, and raised the most money. A representative from Children's Hospital will be present to receive the blankets that have been knitted by students, families and friends of the Detroit Waldorf School during the Knit-a-Thon.

Activities during the day include:

Assembling blankets from knitted and crocheted squares

Kids Crafts (ages 4-10 accompanied by an adult)

Silent Auction, featuring fiber products, services and kids items

Musical performances:

Joe Reilly, Ann Arbor-based singer/songwriter, will perform songs from his recently released Touch the Earth CD, and sing a song composed for this event, at 1 p.m.
