Minn 42, MSU 34 - Final

Very troubling game for the Spartans. Coach Mark Dantonio's team has three starters out because of injury. The health status of Larry Caper (head), Danny Fortener (head) and Joel Nitchman (possibly a leg?) is uncertain. All three are big losses. MSU can kiss a New Year's Day bowl game goodbye. With three games left, the program still needs at least two more wins to be bowl eligible. Of Mark Dantonio's 15 losses, 12 are now by eight points or less. If MSU football ever wants to move forward from its troubling past, something must change. What would you suggest?

Final: Gophers 42, MSU 34

Adam Weber throws a pass to Nick Tow-Arnett that escaped his hands and fell right into the arms of teammate Duane Bennett. Bennett ran the ball in for a touchdown. Mark it down as a 59-yard gain. Officials ruled the play a pass after it initially appeared to be a fumble recovery.

Swenson FG. Minn 35, MSU 34

Brett Swenson's 20-yard field goal gets the Spartans within a point with 8:10 left. Several key injuries for the Spartans right now. Starting running back Larry Caper and starting safety Danny Fortener are out with what appear to be head injuries. Starting center Joel Nitchman is also out with an undisclosed injury sustained during that last series. Will Nitchman come back? Hard to tell. It might be up to John Stipek to carry the load at center the rest of the way.

After three: MSU 31, Minn 28

Kirk Cousins finds Dion Sims for an 11-yard scoring pass. Big turnaround for MSU. It happened after Adam Weber fumbled a snap at Minnesota's own 24. Jerel Worthy recovered the fumble. Should be a crazy, crazy fourth quarter. What else would you expect from the Spartans? Plus, it's Halloween. I got a feeling we're going to see yet another memorable finish. Yet another game that will be tough to write on deadline. I hope you fans enjoy it.

Big loss for MSU

Word up here in the press box is that running back Larry Caper won't return to the field. He apparently has a head injury. Edwin Baker becomes the feature back until further notice. Caper is on the sideline. Was told up here in the press box he's in green warm-ups.

Martin again. Minn 28, MSU 24

Keshawn Martin, an Inkster native, runs 84 yards for a score on an end-around play. Lots of offense in this game. No defense. We've seen these kind of games before. Some of those ones in the John L. Smith era sure were wild.

More trouble for MSU. Minnesota up 28-17

Adam Weber is having his way with MSU's defense. He threw a 48-yard pass to Troy Stoudermire that set up a 1-yard Duane Bennett touchdown run. Weber has three touchdown passes tonight. His 48-yard pass got past Spartans corner Chris L. Rucker. As fans know, Rucker has had trouble all season staying with opposing receivers. Weber had 288 passing yards by the 7:44 mark of the third quarter. That number eclipsed a season-high.

We got a game. Minn 21, MSU 17

Keshawn Martin blasts his way 93 yards on the opening kickoff for a touchdown. It was MSU's first since Demond Williams did it in 2005 against Indiana. That was the first kickoff return for touchdown against Minnesota since one against Montana State in 2008.
